A Kid's
Guide to Fire Safety at Home
A GREAT resource forwarded to Hometown Journey by "JOEY"- THX

Fires are
dangerous: they can destroy things and hurt people. There are ways to help
prevent fires from starting. Knowing what to do in case of a fire can help you
and your family get out of your house quickly and safely. Follow these tips to
make a fire less likely to happen in your home.
-
Check all of the wires, cords, and extension cords in your house to
make sure they are firmly in the wall socket and that they are not
frayed. Wires that are frayed have some of the metal wire showing
through the plastic coating, which can cause a fire. Replace any
frayed wires. Don’t put too many cords in one outlet. Don’t play
with electrical cords and make sure your pet doesn’t play with or
eat them.
-
Make sure your kitchen is safe. Keep curtains, potholders, and
towels away from the stove. Only cook in the kitchen with an adult.
Do not use any appliances, like blenders or mixers, near the sink.
Stay away from the oven, especially when the door is open.
-
Do not play with things that can start fires, like matches,
firecrackers, and candles. Even a tiny flame can grow into a big
fire.
-
Make sure your family has smoke detectors near the kitchen and near
the bedrooms. Test the batteries every month and change them when
you change your clocks in the spring and fall.
-
Make sure there is a fire extinguisher in your house and that
everyone knows where it is and how to use it.
-
Don’t put anything on top of a lamp, light bulb, heater, or
radiator. Clothes, towels, blankets, and toys can catch fire.

Sometimes
fires happen, even if you tried to prevent them. What do you do if a fire
happens at your house? Follow these tips.
Make a
Fire Plan
How would
you get out of your house safely during a fire? First, know two ways to get out
of every room in your house: doors, windows, and sliding patio doors can all be
exits. Second, know how to get out of a second floor room if the fire is
downstairs: know where the stairs are and have emergency ladders that hook onto
the windows ready in each room. Third, know where to meet up with your parents
and family, like a neighbor’s yard or a nearby park bench. Finally, practice
your fire plan with your family.

In
Case of a Fire
Fires get hot and smoky fast. It is hard to breathe and to see during a
fire. The air near the ground is cleaner and easier to breathe, so crawl
on the floor to your fire exit. Feel to see if the door is hot. If it is
hot, do not open it. Go to your second exit. If the door is cool, open
it and see if you can go out through the hallway. Go outside as soon as
you can and go to your family’s safe meeting place outside. Do not stop
and look for anything or anyone. If you cannot get outside, do not hide
in a closet or under the bed. If you can’t get out of your room, make
sure firefighters can see you when they come in.
In
Case Your Clothes Catch on Fire |
 |
If your
clothes catch on fire, stop, drop, and roll. First, stop where you are. Fire is
scary, but running when your clothes are on fire will not help. Second, drop to
the ground. Third, roll over and over until the fire goes out. Call out for help
while you roll on the ground. Someone will come to help put out the fire.
